Camel Toe and Wine

BlizzmasBeen a busy year for these wrong ‘uns. They’re about to play their Blizzmas ball after which they’ll disappear back into the underworld from which they crawled and hibernate until the spring. Seems a reasonable time to post their abject festive ditty ‘Nothing For Christmas’. I’m campaigning for a re-issue next year with a version of East 17’s ‘Stay’ and some other xmas favourite on the b-side. They’d probably have to record it in January if they want vinyl pressed in time for next xmas, so we may have to go for 2017. Saw them play for the first time in ages the other week (getting the panto in early this year) and they were great. There’s widespread agreement that second album ‘Everybody Come To Church’  is bigger, better, bolder, louder, more than the first one and the live show seems to have followed suit, the occassional meandering into lengthy repetitive sections ‘cos they were too drunk to remember where they were in the song are gone, they’re tighter, faster, leaner but still wonderfully stupid. There’s now a sack faced idiot mopping sections of the audience. Pig had got lost but he’ll be back no doubt. Possibly they could do with some films behind them, something more interesting than the couple of gigs they did in front of ‘Haxan’. Spectacle it is then, but not entirely. I remember back when the first album came out one of them saying that “with Blizzard it’s really the gigs that are the thing” and it still seems true. The crowd they pull seems pleasingly free of guarded hipsters and increasingly full of old punks, ravers and psych heads. Participants, stage divers, people who can remember enjoying a gig without looking at the stage much. ‘Watching’ has replaced ‘Whalebomb’ as the closing freak out where the band hand their instruments to the audience to become one chaotic noisy mess and it’s this that seems to be whole point of the exercise. In a similar way to Sly & the Family Drone oddly enough, there’s that creation of a shared event that doesn’t need to be about anything outside of itself…

I may have had too much sherry…
